What is the best course of study if I want to become a self employed accountant to small businesses?
I have worked in IT until now implementing and training accounting packages, and although I studied bookkeeping a few years ago in Johannesburg to help with the IT projects, I am not trained as an accountant. I am currently working as a bookkeeper but know I can do more so would like to become an accountant and offer these services to local small to medium businesses. It has been suggested that I take the AAT courses but am concerned this would not be sufficient to become self employed in this field. Any advice in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) The most distinguished certificate an accountant can earn is a certified public accountant (CPA) certificate. In Georgia, a CPA certificate can only be earned after the completion of bachelor's in accounting. Additionally, to sit for the CPA examination, you will need to have completed 150 semester hours or 225 quarter hours of designated accounting study.
