How do you become an accountant?

How do you become an accountant?
I'm thinking about being an accountant, I am 15 so I have I have plenty of time to change my mind.. I was just wondering should I take business studies/economic/computing at A-levels and at university, do you go straight into a qualification in ACCA or do you do an undergraduate course in finance and accounting etc. Thanks :-)

Answer 1 :
You usually have to take accountancy at univeristy to become a qualified accountant
Answer 2 :
To be able to take the examinations to become a chartered accountant you would need a degree or an equivalent qualification. However, accountants come from all types of academic backgrounds, for example, I have a friend who is training to be an accountant even though she did a degree in French. The important thing is that you enjoy the courses that you are taking and that, when the time comes to work or apply for a job you will somehow be able to demonstrate the skills needed to be an accountant, this doesn't necessarily have to be through 'traditional' means ie. Having an A Level in Business or a degree in Accounting and Finance. That being said, presumably you think you would enjoy the work involved with being an accountant, so choosing business, maths or economics at A Level would probably be a natural choice for you anyway. So, in summary, don't be afraid to take an unconventional route to acheiving your dream career, there are many possibilities out there, but make sure some way or another you are highly competant in the skills needed for accountancy and that you can demonstrate them.
Answer 3 :
talk to your guidance counselor
